With the help of holidaymakers TUI Care Foundation is harnessing the positive impacts of tourism to make a difference for people and places in destinations around the world.
The TUI Care Foundation uses the positive power of tourism to improve the lives of young people, care for the natural world and help local communities thrive. Founded in 2016 as TUI’s independent Foundation, it identifies opportunities to build projects that use tourism as a force for good and make a lasting difference.
With over 70 projects in 30 countries, it focuses on the unique needs of a destination from coral reef restoration in Bali, to keeping sand and sea plastic free in Cyprus, to vocational training at the TUI Academy for young people in the Dominican Republic or to planting 1.9 million native trees to protect 15,000 hectares of existing high Andean forests.
One of the Foundation’s most popular environmental projects is the TUI Turtle Aid programme, which protects the welfare of new-born turtles in Cape Verde, Turkey and Greece and focuses on safeguarding turtle nests on the beaches, increasing hatchling survival rates and engaging the community and local stakeholders in protecting the marine turtle population.
The TUI Care Foundation also focuses on helping communities to live more sustainably. In Zanzibar, it’s teamed up with social enterprise Chako to help tackle the waste and plastic challenges the island faces. A new plastic upcycling station collects 550,000 tonnes of plastic each year – over 20% of the plastic waste on the island. The project also plays an important role in creating jobs and empowering local women to find employment.
