The baby hedgehogs happily nibble on their cockroaches in the bowl. These cute little spiny creatures don't look like they need much care. But that's far from the truth.
Raising a young animal without a mother is difficult. Miquel Puig and his colleagues work seven days a week at the Cofib wildlife rescue centre in Santa Eugènia. He knows what he's talking about. “Even 24-hour care cannot replace a mother”, says Puig, who has been fascinated by wildlife since he was a child.
Puig finds the moments when he and his colleagues release the animals back into the wild particularly special. “We can't save all the animals. But it's an incredibly great feeling to give a living creature back the life it deserves after such a long period of care and attention.”
