In 1975, Maria Mira and her brother Paco opened a shop in Puerto Soller, where they made and sold leather products such as belts, bags, sandals and hats. “But after about 20 years, the things we made went out of fashion. They had a touch of the '70s and people just called us 'the hippies from the harbour'", says Mira.

"In my work I am investigating the different types of mosquitoes: What species are there on the Balearic Islands, what pathogens do they carry, what do they feed on?", explains the entomologist Carlos Barceló.

Isabel Guarch is a Mallorca-born jewellery designer whose collections are entirely inspired by the island. During her wanderings through Palma's old alleyways, she decided to take the capital's architecture as a model for her designs and use it as the main element of her shiny, predominantly 18-carat gold jewellery.

When Antonio 'Toni' Frau talks about graceful animals, his eyes light up. "I grew up with horses, and they have always been an important part of my life," says the islander from Sóller, who has made it his mission to protect the native horse breed in Mallorca.

"Theatre and music are not just a job for me, but much more of a vocation." 26-year-old Mallorcan Aina Zanoguera from Palma explains how she preserves Mallorca's cultural heritage through music and acting.

Together with her 45-year-old brother, 46-year-old Mallorcan Belén Aguiló runs the Imprenta Nueva Balear printing company, which was founded in 1913 and celebrated its 110th anniversary last year.

“Music has always been my great passion. Nobody in our family was a musician. But I said to my mum at the age of six: ‘Mum, I want to study music.’”

When Francesc Grimalt Oliver stands among the vines, he is in his element. In August 2006, he founded the 4Kilos winery together with his partner Sergio Caballero. With the simplest of means, a solid but good drop was created.

The photographer Josep Planas i Montanyà left his granddaughter a legacy: around three million photos and negatives as well as around 18,000 postcards are stored in the archive of the Casa Planas cultural centre in the Es Fortí district of Palma.

“Every week we supply around 200 families in need with food, baby food and hygiene and household cleaning products," explains Catalina Aguiló. The Palma-born woman founded the Mallorcan aid organisation 14 years ago, in August 2009, with other supporters.

Families, young couples and groups queue up to get the best seats by the window. For many tourists, the ride on the historic ‘Tren de Sóller’ train is truly a highlight during their holiday in Mallorca.
