In the 18th episode of the video series “The Mallorcans”, journalist Sibylle Tiessen delves into the world of Marga Melià, a trailblazing filmmaker from the Balearic Islands. This episode, presented by TUI and supported by the TUI Care Foundation, explores Melià’s unique approach to storytelling and her impact on cinema.
Melià’s journey began with a love for stories. “My mother’s tales fascinated me from a young age,” she reflects. “It wasn’t until later that I realized filmmaking was my true calling.” After studying journalism and writing a book about Mallorca’s artists, she ventured into film, making history as the first woman from the Balearics to release a feature film in cinemas.
Her debut film, “Bittersweet Days”, marked a significant milestone. “The film isn’t just fiction; it’s deeply personal,” Melià says. “It reflects my own struggles and search for happiness.” The story of a discontented woman mirrors Melià’s own experiences and societal questions about expectations and personal choices. Melià’s films often feature Mallorca’s landscapes, blending personal narrative with cinematic art. “Mallorca is a part of me,” she notes. “Even though I’ve lived in different countries, returning here to work and raise my family feels right.”
