TUI and Repsol Team Up to Launch First Biofuel Coach Trial

For 55 guests, it was the end of a great holiday when the coach picked them up from their hotel to go to Alicante Airport. For TUI, it marked the beginning of a new chapter in its bid to lower transport emissions in destinations. This was the first time a TUI coach ran entirely on biofuel, made from waste, such as used cooking oil. In collaboration with Repsol, TUI is piloting this biofuel initiative in parts of its Benidorm fleet of coaches. Starting from mid-October, a portion of the fleet will be running on renewable diesel, also known as HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil).

This fuel can lower fuel-related emissions by up to 90%1 compared to conventional diesel fuels. The exact reduction depends on the batch supplied, with the specific percentage documented in the batch's sustainability certification.

This trial will assess the effectiveness and performance of renewable diesel in real-world conditions.

TUI remains optimistic about the potential of this trial and is actively exploring further ways to lower emissions across its ground transport operations.  Ground transport is just one part of TUI's efforts to lower emissions. The company has also set emission reduction targets for its airline, cruises, and hotels, which have been validated by the independent Science Based Targets initiative, a collaboration between the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and CDP. (Emission reduction roadmaps (tuigroup.com)).  The company’s ongoing commitment to responsible travel continues to shape its future plans, with more exciting developments expected soon.
