Hotels recognised for leading sustainability practices

Our TUI Global Hotel Awards bring together the best of the best. There was strong competition in the sustainability part of the awards. These awards celebrate and recognise hotels that truly put sustainability at the heart of what they do and are shaping the future of holiday experiences in one of three areas, People, Planet and Progress (aligned with our Sustainability Agenda). These categories were judged by an external committee and set criteria.

Let us introduce you to the winners in the ‘Planet’ & ‘Progress’ categories, as well as the special ‘Sustainability Innovation’ category winner.

This hotel has been recognised for its sustainable hotel farming initiative. Centered on zero waste, organic farming, staff training and waste minimization. This hotel is reducing their energy footprint, protecting local biodiversity while at the same time giving our guests an impeccable experience.

For example, they cultivate organic herbs, fruits, nuts and vegetables in the hotel gardens. Organic waste from the kitchen is sent to a local company to be converted into biogas for power generation and they receive spent coffee waste from a local coffee manufacturer to create quality fertilizer for their gardens.

This winner has a comprehensive approach to their contribution to sustainability. From their zero single-use plastic programme to their coral propagation project, all while working to attract “interactive travelers” who actively engage with the local community and protection for the environment.

Customers can purchase certain merchandise, where half the proceeds go towards educating the local community on sustainable living, visit their coral propagation project in the lagoon by joining a dive or snorkeling tour or take part in the ‘Plant Your Own Tree’ programme.

This year we also gave out a Sustainability Innovation Award. This is to recognise and celebrate a hotel company that is investing in new technology to accelerate the sustainable transformation of their company and the industry.

The award was given to Atlantica Hotels & Resorts for their efforts to implement and use new technology to accelerate their sustainable transformation. A great example being their efforts in the Greek island of Rhodes; where they have invested in the latest solar panel technology, e-mobility for electric cars, a water desalination plant, and for their involvement in the Destination Co-Lab Rhodes.
