What are TUI customers’ favourite travel destinations? The tourism group has published its new TUI Holiday Atlas for Spring 2019, sharing interesting insights into the holiday decisions taken by TUI customers in several European countries. We are presenting the particular characteristics of some of these holiday destinations in TUI’s Easter Special “Spring Highlights”:
Sal, where salt production gave the fame and even the name to the island, is one of the smaller Cape Verdean Islands in the Atlantic with a population of nearly 35,000. Most of the island is characterised by sand and deserts, but it also features smaller oases, salt mines, silent volcanoes and in particular the turquoise sea, creating a paradisiac atmosphere.
Sal is a popular destination, in particular around Easter, for various reasons: Easter is the biggest religious festival in Cape Verde. Various rituals and traditions take place every day during Holy Week. The highlight is the re-enactment of Jesus’ resurrection in all churches.
Another reason is the climate: In April, temperatures range between 19°C and 25°C. The month of April has zero rainy days and around seven sunshine hours every day.
Tourists also love the typical food available in Cape Verde: fish and seafood play a major role, as most of the inhabitants of the island state live from fishing.
The villages of Pedra Lumeand Santa Maria, in particular, are worth a visit. Pedra Lume is above all famous for its salt lake. Santa Maria offers kilometres of beaches, up to 200 metres wide, as well as many small restaurants and shops. Clearly, the town’s landmark is the former weighing house on the harbour quay. This building used to weigh salt and today offers many souvenir shops.
TUI discovered the potential of Cape Verde early on and has played a crucial role in developing tourism in the island state. In 2005, the first Riu hotel was opened. Today, TUI operates six own hotels in Cape Verde, with an additional new Magic Life Club and a Robinson Club under construction. Tourism has become the most important industry in the West African country.
In addition; TUI Care Foundation is involved in local activities: In cooperation with local projects, TUI Care Foundation helps protect the nesting sites of sea turtles on the beaches and engages inhabitants and local partners in activities aimed at protecting the turtle population.
