TUI Sustainability Year 2024 in Numbers

Here are some of the successes TUI has achieved in the area of sustainability in 2024. Next year, we will continue working towards our ambitious goals: expanding the positive impacts of tourism worldwide, further reducing the environmental footprint of our operations, and actively involving our colleagues and customers in this transformation. In doing so, we foster prosperity and development. Tourism is a force for good.

A 38 % rise in port calls with on shore power was achieved at Mein Schiff and Hapag-Lloyd compared to the previous year. Where technically possible, the TUI Cruises fleets consistently sourced shore power in the ports and switched off their onboard engines. Around 15 tonnes of CO2 were saved per call. By the end of the summer season (i.e. by the end of September 2024), 72 calls were completed with shore power, compared to 52 in the previous year. Mein Schiff 2 and Mein Schiff 5 were retrofitted with the equipment required for shore power connection during their scheduled dock periods (in 2023 and 2024).

35,000 hours of training on sustainability topics have been completed by TUI employees across various training schemes and professional development programmes.

1/3 of TUI Hotels & Resorts generate renewable energy to partially meet their energy needs. In Turkey, for instance,  three of the six planned solar power plants have gone into operation in summer. The photovoltaic systems have a total capacity of around 15 megawatts (MW) and will supply eight hotels in Türkiye with energy throughout the year.

11 % less CO2 was emitted per guest night in our Hotels. The number is based on t CO2e from owned, managed and leased TUI Hotels & Resorts in relations to guest nights.

Up to 90 % reduction in fuel-related emissions can be achieved with renewable diesel (HVO) compared to conventional diesel fuels. This fuel is being tested in a pilot project within our coach fleet in Benidorm. The exact reduction varies depending on the batch supplied and is detailed in the batch’s sustainability certification.

100 percent renewable energy powers TUI's office buildings in Germany. On the roof of the TUI Campus in Hanover, a photovoltaic system generates solar power, which, for the first time this year, met the entire office electricity needs of the campus on sunny days. Other office buildings of TUI companies and its own travel agencies in Germany source electricity from regional wind farms in the Weserbergland region. Additionally, 42 e-charging stations are available for employees at the Hanover campus.

65+ contrail avoidance flights were done so far. Research indicates that persistent contrails can significantly impact the climate, so TUI is engaging in different research projects on the topic, for example with the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

1st: TUIfly Netherlands was ranked 1st on the atmosfair Airline Index, which compares and ranks the carbon efficiency of the 200 largest airlines of the world. All TUI airlines assessed were ranked in the top 30 on the list.

1881 experiences, tours and activities have been verified in accordance with international sustainability criteria. Sustainability also plays a key role in our holiday experiences. To assess sustainability, we were one of the first tourism companies to start applying the internationally recognized sustainability criteria to individual tours and activities within the TUI Collection experiences in financial year 2022. In that year, 180 TUI Collection experiences were certified according to these criteria. In financial year 2023, the process was extended to other excursion categories such as National Geographic or Shorex and we finished 2023 with a total of 1420 experiences. By the end of the financial year, a total of 1881 experiences had been verified by Control Union in accordance with recognized sustainability criteria. We offer these tours under the “Green & Fair” label.

1,700 tons of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) were used by TUI airline in the financial year 2024, replacing an equivalent amount of conventional kerosene. Measured by volume, that was 50% more than the SAF used during the previous financial year. SAF is a key enabler in reducing emissions in aviation and has the potential of reducing the CO2 emissions significantly (up to ~80-85% [1]). To further improve our airline's climate efficiency, utilizing SAF remains a key element of our 2030 roadmap. MOUs (Memorandums of Understanding) for future procurement have been signed.

420,330 people were reached with environmental education initiatives by the TUI Care Foundation.

12.1 million guests stayed at a hotel with a GSTC-recognized certification during the fiscal year 2024, representing a 15% increase compared to the previous year. The number of certified partner hotels rose by approximately 38% to 2,051. The GSTC Criteria are the established global standard for sustainable tourism and cover four main aspects: effective sustainability planning, maximizing social and economic benefit for local communities, valuing culture heritage and reducing negative impacts on the environment.

An estimated 24 million plastic bottles are saved annually through the installation of Brita water filters at 72 Jaz hotels in Egypt.
