Tourism is considered to be one of the key industries. It creates employment and secures income generation opportunities for the local communities in the destinations. Tourism thus delivers an essential contribution to sustainable economic development. By creating jobs, it helps to secure the livelihoods of families and communities and thus supports the local economy.
How TUI Blue hotels promote local economic development
Sustainability at TUI Blue
Apart from environmental aspects such as reducing the CO2 footprint or freshwater consumption in TUI Blue hotels, the “Sustainable Blue“ initiative also aims to promote local hiring. Currently, over 60 per cent of the employees already come from the respective region. The goal is for TUI Blue hotels to recruit 70 per cent of their staff locally within the region. The TUI Blue Playa de Barossa hotel in Andalusia goes one step further and cooperates with the Asodown association. It offers young people with Down’s Syndrome or other intellectual impairments the opportunity to work as an intern at TUI Blue hotel during the summer months so as to strengthen their social integration and promote their independence. The goal of the joint initiative is to improve the young people’s quality of life. They work in different areas – from the kitchen via the reception all the way to maintenance. After completing their training, the hotel offers employment to some of the young people.
As one of the key sectors in the holiday destinations, tourism is thus a major driver of employment growth. The ten goals of the “Sustainable Blue” initiative actively promote sustainability in tourism.
